Question re Windows 7 |
|
After much hassle and many hours with techs, I wound up reinstalling the OS on my Dell Latitude. I figured that, since I had to do it, I'd install Windows 7 Professional, which I've heard wonderful things about.
With that done, I've been reinstalling software. Now when I download F5, I get a message saying that Vista has been detected on my computer. I'm not running Vista. I also get a message each time I go to open F5 asking whether I want to let it change my computer, or something to that effect. Can you tell me whether you've had any outstanding issues with Windows 7 Pro, and if so, what I need to do in order to avoid them.

No, there should be no issues with Windows 7. I'm running it on two Windows 7 machines myself.
Occasionally we'll have a problem with a 64 bit operating system due to the unique file structure. If you encounter problems and have 64 bit, then we maybe need to talk.
Otherwise, the problems you mentioned are easily explained:
- The Windows Vista message is just because the version number is higher than Windows Xp, and at the time of writing that code, Windows 7 didn't exist, so it assumed anything above XP was Vista. You can ignore that message.
- The other messages you're getting are coming from Windows 7's UAC or User Account Control. Its this obtrusive, annoying 'feature' that is suppose to make your machine more secure by asking you every time you do any little thing if its ok to let this program do this. The first thing I do when I install Windows 7 or Vista (as Vista has this too) is to shut off UAC.
If it's annoying you like it annoys me, you should be fine without it as long as you have some sort of antivirus or internet security software running.
You can minimize the amount of prompts that the UAC gives you about every little change. Shutting off UAC will eliminate most of the prompts.
Turn off User Accounts Control (UAC) under Control Panel --> User Accounts

I actually had already figured that part out by the time I got your reply, and it fixed most of the problem. But I've still got the little blue-and-yellow Windows security shield icon sitting on top of the F5 shortcut, and when I click on "properties," I get a pop-up marked "Problems with shortcut" which says, "The folder 'F5' specified in the Start In box is not valid. Make sure that the folder exists and that the path is correct." I've cleared out caches and reinstalled F5 several times, but nothing I do seems to correct it.
Most likely this will prove to be nothing more than an annoyance, since so far I haven't experienced any problem with F5's functionality. But I also haven't really put it through all its paces yet since I installed the new OS, so I don't know for sure. I won't worry about it right now as long as F5 seems to be operating properly in all other respects. It's probably just a harmless glitch with the new OS.

Well make sure when you right click the icon and go to Properties that in the 'Start In' field says something like:
"C:\Program Files\F5\"
If you have 64 bit it should be something like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\F5\"
The quote symbols SHOULD be in there as well.
